The short version:

  • On TikTok, Azelaic hashtags carry about 3.1 billion views and hypochlorous about 1.2 billion, and posting on both climbed all year.

  • Amazon searches roughly doubled alongside: hypochlorous up 79% to 1.36 million a month, azelaic up 162% to 1.71 million.

  • Two brands, Anua and The Ordinary, hold more than half of azelaic sales. Hypochlorous has no clear leader.

  • Hypochlorous is growing fastest outside the face, in the home, with babies and with pets.

  • We name 16 brands to watch, two early, five growth and nine buyout, each with the number that would prove the call wrong.

Two skincare ingredients took off on TikTok this year, and Amazon searches for both roughly doubled. Shoppers find them in videos and buy them on Amazon. The two moved together; we can't say one caused the other.

TikTok is where shoppers find them

Azelaic acid hashtags on TikTok carry about 3.1 billion views across about 141,000 videos. Hypochlorous carries about 1.2 billion across 93,000. In the videos we sampled, monthly posts about azelaic rose from 5 to 148 between October 2025 and September 2026, and hypochlorous posts from 19 to 105. Azelaic drew more than 40 million views a month in our sample from June on.

The conversation runs deeper for azelaic. Reddit carries about 46 posts a day on it, against about 5 for hypochlorous. On both, the most common comment is some version of "does it work?"

Hypochlorous leans on ads. About half of the hypochlorous videos we sampled were paid or shop posts, mostly medicube and Dr.Althea. The organic hits show uses: a video of someone spraying their hands drew 6 million views, and one cleaning makeup brushes drew 3.8 million.

Amazon is where they buy

Amazon searches for hypochlorous acid rose 79% in a year, to 1.36 million a month. Azelaic rose 162%, to 1.71 million. Google shows the same shape off Amazon: both up about 2.7 times in two years, with a joint jump in March and April 2026.

Bar chart of Amazon US monthly searches. Hypochlorous rose from 761,000 in September 2025 to 1.36 million in September 2026, up 79%. Azelaic rose from 650,000 to 1.71 million, up 162%.

Both serve the same shopper: sensitive, red or breakout-prone skin, buying at mass price. The shelves they have built look very different.

Azelaic acid already has its leaders

Anua and The Ordinary hold more than half of azelaic's Amazon sales between them. Three of the top six belong to Estée Lauder, Unilever and e.l.f.

Share of Amazon US azelaic acid sales, 30 days to 30 September 2026: Anua 36%, The Ordinary 18%, Paula's Choice 6%, Good Molecules 5%, Naturium 5%, everyone else 30%.

None of these brands are built around the ingredient. No leader takes more than about 15% of its own Amazon sales from azelaic. Shoppers already search by brand: "anua azelaic acid" went from about 2,000 searches a month to 108,000 in two years. Anua is also the brand TikTok names most, followed by SKIN1004.

Hypochlorous acid has no clear leader yet

Four brands hold about 10% of hypochlorous sales on Amazon, each. The largest single owner is a private equity firm: NexPhase Capital holds about 19% across Magic Molecule, CleanSmart and SkinSmart.

Share of Amazon US hypochlorous acid sales, 30 days to 30 September 2026: medicube 10%, Tower 28 10%, Briotech 10%, BLDG Active 10%, CleanSmart 8%, Magic Molecule 8%, Aquia 4%, everyone else 39%. CleanSmart and Magic Molecule are owned by NexPhase Capital.

Search explains why the shelf is still open. About 480,000 of the roughly 600,000 monthly searches added this year name no brand. The plain search for "hypochlorous acid spray" goes to whoever wins on price, reviews and placement, so newcomers move fast. Aquia, a $14 spray, went from almost nothing to $3.6 million on Amazon in a year, and e.l.f. and PanOxyl both launched mists in 2026. medicube, one of the four Amazon leaders, is also the brand TikTok names most, mostly through paid posts.

Hypochlorous is moving into the home and the pet aisle

The fastest growth is outside the face: home cleaning, gallon refills, babies and body care. TikTok shows the same spread. After acne, the most common uses in the videos we sampled were the home, body, babies and pets.

Amazon US monthly searches containing hypochlorous, September 2025 to September 2026. Baby searches 700 to 16,900, 24 times. Gallon searches 1,800 to 38,000, 21 times. Body searches 2,000 to 34,000, 17 times. Hypochlorous acid spray for home 27,000 to 111,000, 4 times.

Reddit points the same way. 56% of hypochlorous posts sit outside general skincare: eczema, piercing aftercare, dry eye, parenting, pets and cleaning.

Pets already have a scaled brand. Vetericyn does about $12.6 million a year on Amazon, and its owner, Innovacyn, also owns BLDG Active. Innovacyn and NexPhase are the two groups that already span skin, home and pets.

Investors found both early

NexPhase invested in Magic Molecule's parent in August 2025, after the company bought the manufacturer behind it. Since then Magic Molecule has moved from Target and Ulta into CVS and Walmart. In azelaic, Aria Growth Partners has held a stake in The INKEY List since 2022, well before searches doubled, and invested in Good Molecules in May. L Catterton led Remedy's $20 million Series A in June.

The nearest price signals sit next door. In January, Clorox agreed to pay $2.25 billion for GOJO, the maker of Purell, about 11.9 times adjusted EBITDA after expected tax benefits. Sensitive-skin, clinical and acne brands sold since 2017 have cleared at a median of about 4.8 times revenue.

Brands to watch, by stage

We checked 32 brands behind these two trends and called 16 to watch. We group them by Amazon US sales over the last twelve months: early under $2 million, growth $2 million to $10 million, buyout $10 million and up. Brands backed by a fund are judged on the same tests as everyone else; brands bought by a strategic are left out. Each call names the number that would prove it wrong, and we score every call in October 2027 on June to August 2027, whether it was right or not.

The opportunity sits in growth and buyout. Together the 16 sold about $275 million on Amazon in the last twelve months. Every independent hypochlorous brand we found under $2 million on Amazon is either shrinking or sells only on Amazon.

Early: under $2 million on Amazon

  • Personal Day (hypochlorous). Lili Reinhart's acne brand reached about 700 Ulta stores in its first year and has no brand-run Amazon listing yet. Wrong if there is still none by October 2027.

  • Geek & Gorgeous (an azelaic derivative). $2.1 million on Amazon, up 753%, from about $13,000 a week last summer to $57,000. Founder-led. Wrong if weekly sales fall below $57,000 in June to August 2027.

Growth: $2 million to $10 million

  • Remedy (azelaic). $8.1 million on Amazon, up 352%, after an L Catterton-led Series A. In Target nationwide since December 2025. On Amazon its top product is a retinol dark-spot serum; the azelaic serum is new there. Wrong if growth is under 50%.

  • Bushbalm (hypochlorous body spritz). $6.1 million, up 88%, in about 1,400 Ulta stores. Sales rose far faster than its listings. Founder-owned. Wrong if growth is under 25%.

Buyout: $10 million and up

  • Prequel (hypochlorous). $26.6 million, up 253%. New CEO in July 2026. Wrong if growth is under 25%.

  • Tower 28 (hypochlorous). $22.3 million, up 107%, with doubled shelf space in 500 Sephora stores. Its listings grew from 56 to 128, so part of the growth is range. Wrong if growth is under 30%.

  • Briotech (hypochlorous). $20.7 million, up 52%, and the only founder-led hypochlorous leader under $40 million. Part of its sales are home cleaning. Wrong if growth is under 15%.

  • Peach Slices (azelaic). $17.3 million, up 84%, in every Ulta, Walmart and CVS. Wrong if growth is under 20%.

  • PURITO (azelaic). $11.8 million, up 55%. Korean sensitive-skin brand backed by Corstone Capital. Wrong if growth is under 15%.

  • Dr.Althea (hypochlorous). $41.1 million, up 173%, in about 1,350 Ulta stores and the second most-named hypochlorous brand on TikTok. Founder-led. Wrong if growth is under 30%.

  • BASED (hypochlorous). $44.8 million, up 166%, with $11.7 million on TikTok Shop in the last 30 days. Founder-led. Wrong if growth is under 25%.

  • Good Molecules (azelaic). $49.0 million, up 66%, with an Aria Growth Partners minority stake since May. Wrong if growth is under 20%.

Growth here is June to August 2026 against the same months of 2025, so the season cancels out. The 12-month figure is shown for size.

Who we left out, and why

Sixteen of the 32 brands did not make the list. ALT. Fragrances and BIODANCE are growing fast but are not built on either ingredient. Aquia, Hypristine and Littley sell only on Amazon or as private label. medicube and BLDG Active belong to strategic owners. grace & stella, SkinSmart, e11ement, Honeydew Labs and Base Laboratories are shrinking, and Topicals and Vashe are flat. Michael Malul grew mainly by adding listings, and Particle is down 74% from its peak.

What it means

For brands. A plain hypochlorous face spray is heading toward $12. The brands that hold price own a use where trust matters: baby, eyelid, wound care, body. TikTok is already showing those uses, and Amazon search is following. In azelaic, the most common question on TikTok is whether it works. A brand that answers it plainly, with what to expect week by week, has room next to Anua and The Ordinary.

For investors. In hypochlorous, look for a brand that owns a use, or a platform that spans several. Treat azelaic as a test of catalog depth. A brand that sells both ingredients well has a redness franchise, and today only medicube does both at scale. Of the 16 brands above, Tower 28, Bushbalm and BASED own a shelf or a use in hypochlorous, NexPhase's Magic Molecule and CleanSmart are the closest thing to a platform, and Remedy, Peach Slices and Good Molecules are azelaic's growth beneath the two leaders.
